Types of Markers
Monument Types
There are several different memorial marker styles available today, from a simple flat marker to a custom shape and size. Depending on where your loved one is laid to rest, you may be limited in some of the selections you can make. Before you decide on a marker we’ll help you determine the options available for your loved one based on the cemetery in which they’re interred. Some of the more common markers and their benefits are described below.
Flat and Bevel Markers
Flat markers are exactly as they sound. They are installed flush with the ground and are usually one of the more cost-effective solutions in the marketplace today. Bevel or pillow markers are similar, but have a slight angle to them, making them easier to read and setting them a little higher off the ground. The main advantages of flat markers are the ease of installation, no need for a base, and simplicity of design. Bevel markers can be installed with a base, giving it a more formal look. Some of the drawbacks of flat and bevel markers include difficulty locating your marker and increased need for cleaning since the stone is closer to the ground and more susceptible to dirt and debris buildup, as well as maintenance equipment damage.
Slanted Markers
Slanted markers are similar to upright markers, with the exception that they have an angled front face. Angled memorial markers can be installed directly on the ground or placed on a base. Many cemeteries provide guidelines for installation with or without a base, so it is wise to contact the cemetery to determine whether or not a base is required. Slanted headstones provide for easier reading and can be created as single or companion stones.
Upright Markers
Upright markers are one of the more commonly used headstones available today. They’re the classic looking headstone which everyone thinks about when they think about a gravestone. Upright headstones, like slanted markers, can often be installed with or without a granite base, though it is always a good idea to check with your cemetery for their requirements. One of the main benefits of an upright headstone is the large surface on which to inscribe and design. As well, upright headstones can be engraved on both sides and designed as companion stones.
Etchings
Etching a photo into an upright monument can often bring a special look to your marker. Etching is avaialble on our black granite markers, enabling good contrast. Please contact us here for details.
Shapes and Custom Markers
Sometimes a conventional headstone isn’t right for our loved ones and something unique is needed to remember them. Special shapes, larger monuments, ledger markers which cover the entire site, and even custom creations are all possible – the only restriction is your imagination. Whether it’s a pair of hearts, a teddy bear, or just a curious shape, many unique shapes are readily available for your loved one.
Bronze Markers
Bronze markers provide a unique and elegant look for a grave site. They are usually cast, and are then installed onto a granite base. Bronze markers often require a bit more maintenance to keep them looking good, and don’t often wear as well as granite.
